Does anyone remember this book or short story?

In junior high or elementary school we were assigned a book about a sled dog and a little boy. The little boy entered a sled race and at the end, the dog pushed himself to win so hard that his heart exploded and the little boy carried him over the finish line. Anyone know the name of this story? Thanks in advance.
